How the Chinese Zodiac Works
The Chinese zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle, with each year assigned to a specific animal. The cycle follows this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
- 12-Year Cycle: The zodiac animals rotate in a fixed order every 12 years. For example, if you were born in a Rat year, the next Rat year will be 12 years later.
- Chinese New Year: The Chinese zodiac year typically starts on Chinese New Year (which falls between January 21 and February 20), not January 1st. However, for simplicity, our calculator uses the calendar year.
- Five Elements: Each animal is also associated with one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), which rotate in a 60-year cycle (12 animals Γ 5 elements).
- Personality Traits: People born in a specific zodiac year are believed to share certain personality traits and characteristics with their zodiac animal.
Note: For the most accurate Chinese zodiac sign, you would need to know if you were born before or after Chinese New Year, as the zodiac year changes on that date, not January 1st.
